Europe Finally Fears the Algorithm of War

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran, utilizing Palantir’s Maven Smart System and Anthropic’s artificial intelligence model to strike over 13,000 targets. Among these was a converted elementary school in Minab where an algorithmic targeting error killed 165 civilians, sparking intense European anxiety over machine-speed warfare.

This operational disaster occurred just as European militaries integrated the same unregulated US-made targeting architecture, which had been deliberately exempted from the European Union's civilian AI Act. The strategic vulnerability of this integration became apparent on June 12, 2026, when the US Commerce Department abruptly severed non-US access to Anthropic's frontier models, as CEPR researchers found. Rather than imposing regulatory oversight, European leaders reacted to this sovereignty crisis by launching the 800 billion euro ReArm Europe defense-spending package. This initiative aims to build independent military AI capabilities, yet it risks directing contracts back to the very defense firms responsible for the original targeting infrastructure.

Relying on foreign software architectures creates severe operational vulnerabilities during active conflicts. Sovereign control over algorithmic targeting databases is now a core national security requirement. Sudden supply chain cutoffs can instantly disable advanced weapon systems. Nations must develop indigenous software pipelines to ensure operational continuity.
