Michael Goodwin: Trump gave Iran a chance at peace — but the president cannot trust the mullahs

New York Post  |  Michael Goodwin

President Trump is exploring options to restart stalled peace talks with Iran, despite the mullahs' refusal to meet his terms, which include Iran never possessing a nuclear weapon and destroying approximately 1,000 pounds of enriched uranium. The US recently conducted "self-defense" airstrikes against Iranian ships laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz and a surface-to-air missile site, prompting Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to threaten American military bases.

Iran's rejection of these core demands, even after US involvement in Israel's wars last year and this February, suggests a commitment to a "doomsday scenario" against Israel and the United States. Iranian officials reportedly harbor a personal grudge against Trump and seek financial relief without granting him a diplomatic victory. Trump now demands that Gulf Arab monarchies and other beneficiaries of an Iran accord join the Abraham Accords, recognizing Israel, to secure lasting regional peace. The Hezbollah-Israel conflict further complicates negotiations, leaving Trump with choices between continued dialogue or renewed military pressure.
