An AI Crash Is a Real Possibility

Persuasion | Damon Silvers and Matt Scherer

Generative artificial intelligence developers are accumulating unprecedented debt, including $570 billion in 2026 alone, to fund a massive $7 trillion data center buildout that far outpaces their revenues. This widening capital-expenditure-to-revenue gap threatens to trigger a systemic financial crisis because these highly leveraged firms now comprise 45 percent of the S&P 500 market capitalization.

Historically, physical infrastructure booms like railroads possessed a useful life measured in decades, but modern AI chips become obsolete within five years, creating immense, immovable fixed lease costs. Fierce competition among major developers has sparked aggressive price wars, with discounts reaching 75 percent, even as corporate clients like Uber cap usage due to soaring token costs. To prevent a catastrophic market collapse reminiscent of the 1873 panic, federal regulators must immediately deploy post-2008 oversight tools, including rigorous financial auditing and bank stress tests, to mitigate toxic debt concentration.

Comment
India's sovereign technology ambitions rely heavily on the state-backed IndiaAI Mission and rapid domestic data centre expansion. A sudden contraction in global private capital would jeopardise these capital-intensive infrastructure projects. New Delhi must therefore diversify its technological partnerships beyond Silicon Valley's debt-driven ecosystem. This approach secures long-term digital sovereignty against external financial shocks.
