China turns Russia’s drone war into a warning for U.S.

The Washington Times  |  David Harris

China is leveraging its massive industrial capacity to supply critical components to Russia, enabling Moscow to scale up the production of fiber-optic drones and overwhelm Ukrainian defenses. This rapid industrial mobilization demonstrates that manufacturing endurance can ultimately surpass battlefield innovation, systematically shifting the material balance of the Eastern European conflict.

While Kyiv initially maintained a technological advantage through rapid commercial adaptation, Beijing's surging exports of lithium-ion batteries, fiber-optic cables, and chemical precursors have systematically reinforced Moscow's military-industrial output. This development serves as a stark warning for the United States, which faces a similar challenge in the Pacific theater where long distances demand resilient targeting networks and long-range precision fires. To counter this manufacturing dominance, Washington must move beyond simply purchasing tactical platforms and instead prioritize production resilience. This strategy requires establishing distributed manufacturing networks across allies like Japan, South Korea, and Australia while actively imposing costs on the adversary's industrial supply chains.
