The People’s Republic of China is actively waging cognitive warfare against Taiwan to achieve whole-of-society mind superiority and force annexation without triggering a high-risk maritime invasion. This psychological offensive systematically targets the island's population to erode domestic morale, exploit social divisions, and kindle deep skepticism regarding United States security commitments.
To avoid the severe domestic instability of a kinetic conflict—where drone swarms and high casualties could extinguish single-child lineages representing 70% to 80% of PLA soldiers—Beijing relies on its doctrinally integrated "Three Warfares" strategy. This asymmetric approach, outlined in the 1999 text Unrestricted Warfare, leverages social media influencers and legal distortions of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 to weaken resistance. To counter this offensive, Washington and Taipei must launch truth-based counter-narratives that expose elite corruption, highlight mainland repression, and emphasize the immense blood cost of a potential Taiwan Strait conflict to the Chinese public.
