On the Strait of Hormuz, BBC finds seized ships and shark fishermen as uneasy calm returns

The Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile as Iran maintains a partial blockade and holds seized commercial vessels despite a fragile ceasefire with the United States. Following intense US-Israeli airstrikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri, a tense calm has returned to the strategic waterway.

This critical maritime corridor, which facilitates approximately one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments, became a primary battleground after hostilities erupted on February 28. Tehran utilized its geographic position to deploy asymmetric warfare tactics, targeting international shipping to secure leverage in ongoing peace negotiations. Although local fishing and market activities in Bandar Abbas are gradually resuming, the devastation of civilian infrastructure underscores the high human cost of the conflict. Mayor Mehdi Nobani warned that any breakdown in the current truce will prompt the immediate and total closure of the passage, threatening renewed global energy disruptions.
