Ukraine's war drone pilots must first survive the 'Killhouse'

Business Insider  |  Jake Epstein

Ukraine's elite 3rd Army Corps is preparing drone operators for high-stakes electronic warfare and tactical piloting at its specialized Killhouse Academy. This intensive training pipeline equips soldiers and foreign volunteers with the precise manual control skills required to navigate first-person-view quadcopters through intense Russian jamming and physical obstacles.

Established two years ago to offset Moscow's numerical superiority, the academy has expanded from basic flight courses to advanced engineering and uncrewed ground vehicle programs. By integrating real-time battlefield data and combat-experienced instructors, the facility constantly updates its curriculum to counter rapidly evolving Russian defensive tactics. As Ukraine produces millions of uncrewed systems annually, the strategic bottleneck has shifted from manufacturing hardware to cultivating skilled pilots capable of surviving hostile environments. Consequently, Kyiv is actively leveraging this hard-won operational expertise to establish international training partnerships, with discussions currently underway to launch similar programs within several NATO member nations.
