FPV drone strikes show Hezbollah's changing tactics against Israel

Hezbollah has escalated its use of small first-person view (FPV) drones, including fibre-optic controlled systems, to attack Israeli soldiers, armoured vehicles, and air defence systems in southern Lebanon and northern Israel. BBC Verify geolocated 35 videos since March 26 showing these strikes, which experts state the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has "so far been unable to develop any effective countermeasures" due to their ability to bypass detection and electronic warfare systems.

These drones, made from commercially available and 3D-printed components costing $300-$500 each, are cheap compared to high-value targets. Israeli media reports indicate four IDF soldiers and one civilian killed, with dozens injured. The IDF acknowledges the threat, investing "significant resources" in improved defences and training. Dr. Andreas Krieg notes the fibre-optics render Israel's jamming capacity "largely irrelevant," forcing Israeli troops to adopt more cautious movements and physical protective measures. The conflict began March 2, following US-Israel air strikes in Iran.
