Poland is rapidly expanding and modernizing its military, aiming to become Europe's strongest and largest army by 2030 with 500,000 soldiers. This ambitious goal, driven by Russia's war against Ukraine, involves a defense budget reaching 200 billion zlotys ($54.74 billion) and significant weapons acquisitions.
Facilitated by a 43.7 billion euro ($50.9 billion) Security for Europe (SAFE) loan, Poland is integrating advanced foreign military systems. Key purchases include 486 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, 100 AH-64E Apache helicopters, 366 M1A2 Abrams tanks, 32 F-35A fighters, and Patriot air defense systems from the U.S. Additionally, Poland is acquiring 36 South Korean FA-50PL aircraft and Swedish A26 submarines. This transformation, despite a presidential veto on the SAFE program, reflects a 207% increase in defense spending since 2016, reaching 4.5% of GDP in 2025, significantly enhancing North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)'s eastern-flank combat capability and creating long-term strategic pressure on Moscow.
