Germany and Japan, 85 years after their alliance as Axis powers in World War II, are rapidly rebuilding their militaries and strengthening ties. This cooperation, expected to gain momentum at the Group of 7 nations meeting in Evian, France, includes sharing know-how, technology, and weapons like drones and helicopters.
Their rearmament is driven by resurfaced wariness of America, heightened fears of a surging China, and an aggressive Russia. Unlike their historical alliance, this new partnership is defensive, with Berlin supporting Ukraine against Russia and Tokyo wary of threats from China and North Korea. They are aligning with other "middle powers" like Britain, Canada, and France, positioning themselves as champions of the rules-based international order against the bullying behaviors of powerful countries, as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated in March.
