The Middle East’s Regional War Flows Through Lebanon

National Interest  |  Alexander Langlois

Israel's ongoing war on Hezbollah and the razing of Lebanon continues unabated, positioning the small eastern Mediterranean country at the core of the Middle East's regional conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran. Lebanon's strategic relevance, particularly due to Hezbollah's role in Iran's "Axis of Resistance" and support for Hamas, has led to a tragedy for its people.

The author largely blames Israel for the conflict, citing repeated ceasefire violations and continued occupation of sovereign Lebanese territory since fall 2024. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political future is tied to sustaining this "perpetual war," exporting the "Gaza model" to southern Lebanon, and advancing annexation. Israel uses Lebanon as a lever to maintain regional fighting, increasing pressure when Gaza ceasefires near. This strategy aims to either spoil US-Iran negotiations or undermine Iran's militia network, allowing continued IDF operations. While the Trump administration has shown willingness to decouple from Israeli interests, its actions will determine if US pressure can end Israel's campaign in Lebanon and facilitate a true ceasefire, allowing 1 million displaced Lebanese to return.
