Ukraine's recent offensive targets Crimea, focusing on disrupting Russian supply lines to the peninsula and occupied southern Ukraine. Since early April, Ukrainian drones have incapacitated the critical 390-mile "Highway of Death" coastal route along the Sea of Azov, which runs from the Russian supply hub of Rostov-on-Don. This route now features hundreds of burned-out wrecks of tractor trailers, tanker trucks, and military transports.
Northern bridges across the Chongar Strait have also been taken out. These strikes have choked maritime supply routes and disrupted rail services, leaving the Kerch Bridge in easternmost Crimea as the only practical route. The Kerch Bridge is also being hit, now handling a fraction of its previous traffic, with daily miles of cars backed up trying to leave Crimea in late June. This strategic campaign aims to isolate Crimea, impacting Russia's military logistics and potentially altering the balance of power in the Black Sea region, with military stakes far beyond payback.
