The 7 October 2023 Hamas attack prompted the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) to launch Operation Swords of Iron in Gaza, confronting an extensive, complex tunnel system. This "Gaza Metro," estimated at 350-450 miles with 5,700 shafts integrated into civilian infrastructure, facilitates Hamas's offensive, defensive, logistical, and command and control operations, challenging IDF conventional superiority.
The IDF's Yahalom unit, specializing in counter-tunnel operations since 1995, initially led efforts, but the network's scale forced a rapid evolution in subterranean combat strategy, including attaching Yahalom and Navy special operations detachments to conventional brigades for unity of effort. The IDF employs a layered detection approach, combining seismic/acoustic sensors, thermal imaging, ground-penetrating radar, visual reconnaissance, human intelligence, and AI/ML. Tunnel investigation uses cameras, military working dogs, and unmanned ground vehicles for reconnaissance. Neutralization methods involve physical collapse via engineering equipment and injecting rapidly expanding polyurethane foam, requiring careful planning to minimize civilian infrastructure damage.
