Ukrainian military has revealed the use of "Terminator" autonomous drones, capable of executing missions without human input, including patrolling, identifying Russian soldiers, and detonating explosives. A senior Ukrainian defense official confirmed an operational test in 2024 involving 10 Terminator quadcopter drones that operated completely independently over three miles, engaging targets based on predetermined AI inputs.
Alexander Kokhanovsky, the system's developer, told New Scientist, "Everything it sees will be killed," highlighting the lack of human connection or video feed during operations. This marks a new, ethically challenging milestone in modern warfare, distinct from semi-autonomous or remotely operated systems that maintain a "human in the loop." Autonomous systems, like a Ukrainian ground robot that captured Russian troops in January (though human-controlled), are increasingly prevalent. However, fully autonomous systems raise significant ethical, legal, and operational concerns regarding accountability, potential targeting of noncombatants, or friendly fire, as AI cannot be held responsible for errors.
