Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced a "logistical lockdown" for the Russian army on May 27, characterized by increased Ukrainian "middle strike" drone attacks on the Russian rear. Ukraine has quadrupled its destruction of Russian logistics, warehouses, equipment, and supply routes, leading to fewer Russian assault operations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on June 1 that Ukrainian drones can now reach Russian military logistics across virtually the entire depth of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory, leaving no safe roads in the south and east.
These attacks focus on critical routes like the R-280 "Novorossiya" highway, a vital land corridor connecting occupied Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea, which serves as an alternative to the Kerch Bridge. The strikes are causing Russian logistics to break down, creating fuel shortages, increasing shipping costs, and impacting the Russian economy. This systematic pressure contributes to the Russian Armed Forces' slowest monthly rate of advance since 2023, approximately 14 square kilometers in May, and could open opportunities for limited Ukrainian counterattacks, despite Russia's efforts to counter the drone threat.
