The fastest-growing apps in 2022

If there is one thing there’s no shortage of, it’s apps. Apps stores are bursting at the seams, making it tricky to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Okta’s recent “Business at Work” report cuts through the noise. They used data from 14.000 customers to identify the ten fastest-growing apps in the world (by customers). Their results are below.

Regular readers of our blog will recognize some apps like Notion or monday.com. However, others may be less familiar to non-specialists, so in this post we’ll introduce you to each of them.

Notion

Notion is a very popular app with a loyal following and we’ve covered it several times, but in case you’ve been living under a rock…

Notion is a silo-busting app that allows effective collaboration between diverse teams. Notion makes it easy for anyone to craft documents, dashboards, websites, and more — all using drag and drop. In Notion, to-do lists and enterprise knowledge live side by side, helping teams keep sight of the valuable context.

Notion users also benefit from an extended ecosystem of creators who create a large collection of community-made templates, resources, and integrations.

Notion lets you design a home space, a developmental roadmap, document libraries, 3D wiki spaces, meeting resources, notes, and on-demand website publishing, all from a collaborative and intuitive workspace.

TripActions

TripActions is rethinking travel, corporate card, and expense management. The app provides smaller companies with technology that were previously available only at large, multinational enterprises.

TripActions lets users manage management, corporate cards, travel booking, and reportable expenses. The app draws on a large inventory of bookings and local travel agents and claims some “AI” functionality.

With TripAction, business travel, corporate cards, and expense reporting all fold into a single solution, making it easy for travellers, administrators, and upper management to quickly plan and approve travel, and to manage travel expenses with dashboards and compliance rules.

Speaking as someone who’s spent many, many hours filling in expense reports, that all sounds pretty awesome. 😅

Postman

If you’re not a developer, you may not have heard about Postman. If you are, you’ll know it can be a real life-saver.

Developers frequently interact with APIs (application programming interfaces). APIs are how programs let developers interact with them via code, for example to get or write data.

APIs can be challenging when they’re opaque or poorly documented (and they always are). That’s the problem Postman tackles: It provides an API platform for building and using APIs. That lets developers access a massive network of APIs and share what they build with developers anywhere in the world.

Nowadays, software users have increasingly high standards for how apps look and feel. As a consequence, successful companies are increasingly using a “design first” approach.

That’s where Figma comes in. It’s an online-first design solution built for collaboration. Figma lets you quickly design and prototype ideas while bringing everybody on the team into the design process.

Keeper is a suite focused on IT and data security. At its core is a password-manager where you can you safely store passwords, logins and passwords, and financial data. It also includes a password generator and MFA, as well as cross-device sync.

However, Keeper is more than just a password manager: The company offers a range of security products and services for enterprises like gateways, ransomware protection, and dark web scanning.

In an age when companies face constant cybersecurity threats from state and non-state actors, Keeper is evidently serving a large and urgent need.

Airtable

Airtable is another entry you’ve probably seen around.

Airtable is like a database with a web front-end. For old corporate people like me, it feels like a web-version of MS Excel with flexible connections and interfaces.

Airtable lets people import information, create relationships in the data, and view the information from different perspectives. That lets you discover and act on previously unseen relationships and resources.

Airtable also lets you design interfaces that present information and allows people to take predefined actions.

In addition, you can design and implement automations that trigger notifications, eliminate redundancies, combine your tools, run code… and on and on. There’s a reason Airtable is so popular. 😉

Fivetran

Have you heard of Fivetran? I didn’t think so. And yet it’s a super-fast growing app.

Fivetran makes it easy for organizations to build data pipelines. For large organizations, that’s a big deal.

monday.com is an online tool for project-management and task-coordination.

What’s special about monday.com is that it offers a lot of flexibility in terms of structure and visualisation. That makes it easy to manage activities and projects for different types of teams, e.g. creative and design teams, software development, marketing, project management, sales and CRM, and more.

Gong

Gong is another app you might not have heard about. It offers organizations “revenue intelligence”, i.e. a platform for generating revenue forecasts and breakdowns.

Gong lets customers answer revenue-centric questions like: “Which are the deals that are most likely to close? What makes your top performers your top performers? Which campaign resulted in the highest ROI?” And so on.

In the past, questions like that could only routinely be answered by large organizations with large staffs and budgets. Gong aims to offers the same insight to smaller organizations at lower cost.

That was a quick introduction to the fastest-growing apps in 2022 according to the OKTA report.

I find it interesting that some of the apps are very well-known while others are less visible… but evidently also very successful.
