As Warfare Evolves Virtual Wargaming Opens Up New Avenues For Militaries

Eurasia Review  |  Kjeld Neubert

Lockheed Martin recently demonstrated ACES, a virtual wargaming platform designed to rapidly test battlefield decisions in a risk-free environment, contrasting with traditional, time-consuming physical exercises. This simulation technology, utilizing Unreal Engine, allows military planners to assess outcomes and refine tactics, as shown in a scenario where Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) and improved sensing capabilities successfully defeated an amphibious assault.

Raashi Quattlebaum, Lockheed Martin vice-president, emphasized that modern warfare's rapid evolution necessitates such digital tools to accelerate training and potentially replace some on-the-ground exercises, which can take over a year to plan. For European militaries, this technology offers a way to improve coordination and synchronize assets across countries. NATO has also adopted this approach, conducting its "Steadfast Deterrence 2026" computer-assisted command post exercise, integrating real-world plans, simulation, and AI-enabled warfighting platforms to replicate Arctic complexities.
