Counter-drone tech is gaining major traction

Asia Times  |  Stephen Bryen

Ukraine is developing cutting-edge counter-drone technology, including specialized "drone killers" that intercept incoming lethal drones, and is now marketing its locally produced system to the Middle East and NATO. This advancement comes as drones have become potent battlefield weapons with deep strike capabilities, used by Ukraine to target Russian strategic bombers, AWACS aircraft, long-range radars, oil installations, port facilities, and the Black Sea fleet.

Both Ukraine and Russia employ drone swarms, often mixing lethal drones with decoys. Drone warfare extends globally, with Iran launching 1,000-1,500 drones at US and allied facilities in February-March 2026, and proxies like the Houthis and Hezbollah extensively using drones, often with Iranian support. Current interception rates, such as Russia's 70-85% against 150-300 nightly drones, are insufficient, causing substantial damage and affecting morale. The US and allies are prioritizing counter-drone systems, despite failing to disrupt Russian and Iranian supply networks that utilize global components.
