Israel cannot applaud an Iran deal that leaves key threats intact - editorial

Jpost

The reported US-Iran deal, while potentially beneficial for oil markets and the White House, is not considered a success by Israel unless it demonstrably weakens Iran's ability to threaten its neighbors. Israel's assessment hinges on whether Iran's nuclear program has been dismantled, its enriched uranium removed, its missiles and drones addressed, and Hezbollah pushed back, all while preserving Israel’s freedom to act.

The current unclear answers to these critical questions are a significant concern, particularly among Iran hawks, pro-Israel conservatives, and lawmakers who previously backed pressure on Tehran, supported airstrikes, and believed this campaign could finally change the balance against the Islamic Republic. This skepticism regarding the deal's efficacy in reducing Iranian threats comes even from President Donald Trump’s own political allies, highlighting deep reservations about its long-term strategic impact on regional security.
