To protect the Iran peace talks, will Trump finally restrain Netanyahu?

US Vice-President JD Vance publicly criticized Israeli critics of the Iran deal on June 18, 2026, emphasizing that the US is Israel's only powerful ally and provides two-thirds of its defensive weapons. President Trump and his advisers have expressed frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's resistance to a ceasefire with Iran, with Trump reportedly calling Netanyahu "fucking crazy" and stating, "I call all the shots."

This follows a period where Israel received tens of billions in US military aid and attacked Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Qatar, unleashing a "genocidal war" on Gaza by fall 2025. Trump now faces the test of restraining Netanyahu from undermining US negotiations with Iran, which aim for a larger nuclear deal in 60 days. US intelligence recently warned Netanyahu will likely sabotage the peace agreement, particularly regarding Israel's continued occupation and attacks in southern Lebanon, which Iran insists must be included in any ceasefire. Trump, seeking a declared victory after a "botched Iran war," has an incentive to impose limits on Netanyahu, especially after Israel's brutal tactics in Lebanon killed over 4,100 people since early March.
