The United States Department of Defense is accelerating efforts to secure domestic lithium-ion battery supply chains to counter China’s overwhelming dominance in the global energy storage market. This critical vulnerability threatens the operational readiness of American military platforms, ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles to next-generation tactical ground vehicles.
To mitigate these risks, the Pentagon is leveraging Defense Production Act Title III funding to establish domestic manufacturing facilities and secure alternative sourcing for critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These supply chain bottlenecks present severe operational risks during potential high-intensity conflicts in the Indo-Pacific, where prolonged logistics lines could be easily disrupted. By reshoring battery production, the United States aims to build a resilient defense industrial base capable of sustaining long-term military readiness and technological superiority. Consequently, securing these supply chains remains a foundational pillar of modern American national security strategy.
