The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) launched a series of targeted operations in Badakhshan Province on July 23, 2026, killing 21 Taliban fighters and capturing significant military equipment in Zebak District. This escalation coincides with the emergence of a new insurgent group, Sepahian-e Mihan, which briefly seized a district administration building in Yaftali Sufla.
These rebellions exploit deep-seated ethnic friction and resource disputes in the predominantly non-Pashtun region, where the Pashtun-dominated Taliban leadership remains highly suspicious of local Tajik commanders. To consolidate authority, the regime deployed special forces to disarm local fighters in Shahr-e Buzurg and ordered 350 independent armed men in Nusay to surrender weapons. Simultaneously, internal fractures have intensified as the Taliban attempt to neutralize Juma Khan Fateh, an influential Tajik commander linked to illegal gold mining. To secure these lucrative assets, the central administration deployed 1,000 fighters to protect gold operations and signed a security pact for the Badakhshan lapis lazuli mine.
