Pakistan launches deadliest attack on Afghanistan in months

Pakistan launched its deadliest attack on Afghanistan in months, conducting air and ground operations that killed 29 militants according to Pakistan's information minister, Attaullah Tarar. These strikes, aimed at the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar splinter group of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) blamed for a deadly weekend assault in Karachi, hit three eastern Afghan provinces.

Afghanistan's Taliban government reported 36 civilians killed and 163 wounded, with residents describing horrific scenes. The violence marks the latest flare-up in fraught relations since 2021, following a weeks-long war in February that displaced tens of thousands. Both countries summoned each other's diplomats, and mediation efforts, including by China, have failed to achieve a lasting resolution. Pakistan asserts its need for strikes against militancy, while Afghan authorities deny harboring attackers and highlight civilian casualties.
