The Army Builds an AI-Enabled “Drone Contact” Layer for Combat

The 101st Airborne Division is integrating AI-enabled systems and robotic technologies at the brigade level as part of the Army’s Transformation in Contact initiative, creating a "drone contact layer" for combat. Col. Richard "Ryan" Bell highlighted that soldiers feed AI systems doctrine and 25,000 drone sensor reports to enhance mission planning and data analysis, generating an "unfair fight" for adversaries.

While AI significantly accelerates order production and planning, enabling orders 72 hours ahead of time at JRTC and allowing battalions to rehearse and build stronger defenses, it currently lacks the capability for commander's intent and course of action development due to its inability to understand 3-dimensional space. Strike-AI, originating from the AI task force, compresses the kill chain to under a minute, facilitating target recognition and sensor-to-shooter links for rapid artillery or one-way attack munitions. Low-cost Attritable Battlefield Enablers (ABE 1.01) drones are deployed first to breach obstacles and identify enemy positions, costing less than three 155mm artillery barrages. This approach emphasizes AI's role in enabling faster, more informed human decision-making rather than replacing human expertise.
