The 2026 Chicago Council Survey revealed that 68 percent of Americans view the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran as not worth the costs, contrasting with 63 percent of Republicans who still support the military campaign. CSIS estimated the conflict's financial cost at $34 billion to $42 billion, alongside 18 US service personnel killed and 624 wounded since February 28, 2026.
This domestic discontent reflects persistent threat perceptions, as 49 percent of respondents still consider Iran’s nuclear program a critical threat—a figure unchanged from 2023 despite Operation Midnight Hammer airstrikes. While 70 percent of Americans support permitting Iranian global petroleum exports and 58 percent back stopping Israeli operations in Lebanon under a prospective peace deal, sharp boundaries remain. Majorities firmly reject core concessions desired by Tehran, including continued Iranian ballistic missile development (80 percent), retention of enriched uranium stockpiles (74 percent), and control over the Strait of Hormuz (68 percent), creating significant domestic constraints on negotiations.
