Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby announced that the Pentagon has initiated a formal review of United States nuclear posture to provide the White House with expanded options against low-yield warhead developments by Russia and China. Speaking at the 2026 Deterrence Symposium in Omaha, Nebraska, defense officials stressed the requirement for flexible regional strike capabilities to deter theater-level conflict escalation without resorting solely to high-yield strategic arsenals.
Current force posture relies heavily on strategic triad modernizations, including the B61-13 gravity bomb, the W88 warhead, and the sea-launched SLCM-N cruise missile. US Strategic Command head Adm. Richard Correll emphasized that developing tactical versatility across non-kinetic, conventional, and limited nuclear options creates operational ambiguity to raise adversary thresholds for nuclear employment. Carnegie Endowment analyst Ankit Panda highlighted that prioritizing regional theater capabilities defers addressing simultaneous two-front damage limitation against major adversaries until the mid-2030s.
