The Taiwanese Military’s Lessons Learned from the U.S.-Iran Conflict

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense is integrating key operational lessons from the U.S.-Iran conflict into its military doctrine, prioritizing air defense, decentralized command, and counter-blockade planning despite severe domestic special defense budget cuts. Taiwan is pursuing an Integrated Battle Command System and low-cost interceptors to shield critical infrastructure against Chinese saturation missile attacks within its "T-dome" framework.

Legislative funding reductions targeting domestic drone production, anti-ballistic missiles, and tactical data links nevertheless threaten lower-echelon operational readiness. To counter potential Chinese leadership decapitation strikes, military commanders are embedding decentralized command and control protocols across joint force formations, a shift actively tested during recent Han Kuang computer wargames. Furthermore, maritime disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has convinced defense planners to elevate joint counter-blockade and energy resupply escort missions alongside traditional counter-landing operations. However, persistent shortages in long-range surface-to-air interceptors leave resupply convoys susceptible to long-range Chinese strikes.

Tactical decentralisation requires an uninterrupted common operating picture, a structural vulnerability when cross-platform networking relies on disparate legacy links. Absent the Integrated Battle Command System to fuse Taiwanese and American sensor nodes, unit-level initiative risks degrading into fragmented, uncoordinated engagements under heavy electronic interference. Field commanders executing localized strikes without centralized air-picture integration face heightened fratricide risks during high-density missile exchanges. Consequently, operational survivability gains achieved through physical dispersion are severely constrained by the bandwidth limits of un-upgraded Link-16 data channels.
