Securing America’s Critical Data Supply Chain

Executive Order 14415 directs the Department of War to illuminate physical defense supply chains, yet securing the data supply chain feeding American military artificial intelligence remains a critical operational vulnerability. Adversaries can quietly subvert defense capabilities without physical kinetic strikes by corrupting logistics databases, manipulating maintenance records, and poisoning artificial intelligence training sets.

As integrated systems like the War Data Platform and Maven Smart System scale across defense networks, unverified data provenance across subcontractors and commercial software vendors severely compromises operational integrity. To mitigate these risks, acquisition policies must mandate standardized Data Bills of Materials and continuous, cryptographic tracking mechanisms throughout every tier of the defense industrial base. Implementing a federated verification layer for data provenance ensures that mission-critical information remains authentic, traceable, and tamper-evident from collection to battlefield execution. Without secure data pipelines, sophisticated military assets remain vulnerable to adversarial information manipulation, compromising command decision-making across high-tempo operational environments.

Corrupting these training or operational inputs shifts adversarial counter-AI from traditional electronic jamming to subtle data-poisoning vector attacks.
