This year’s annual spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank began with quiet fears that US President Donald Trump’s administration would seek to fatally undermine them. They ended with both institutions being sternly rebuked by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for their increasing concern with climate change and diversity, but also with a sigh of relief that they had survived to fight for development another day.
