White House Approves $9 Billion for Spy Agencies to Catch Up on A.I.

The White House has approved a secret $9 billion request to equip U.S. spy agencies, including the C.I.A. and N.S.A., with cutting-edge computer chips essential for fully deploying the latest artificial intelligence models. This significant funding addresses a critical chip shortage that has prevented intelligence agencies from testing and utilizing advanced AI tools on their classified systems, impacting national security operations.

The allocation aims to bolster infrastructure for powerful superchips like Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell, which demand substantial electrical energy and specialized liquid cooling. Furthermore, the N.S.A. has been authorized to continue using Anthropic's advanced model, Mythos, despite Pentagon supply chain concerns, due to the immediate need for computing capacity. A classified contract is being finalized, ensuring the AI model is not used on Americans’ data and serving as a potential template for future agreements. This initiative underscores the increasing integration of AI into military and government operations, from sifting intelligence to aiding battlefield targeting.
