Defeating Iran’s Islamic Republic With War by Other Means

Real Clear Defense  |  Joseph Bosco

President Trump has maneuvered the United States into a classic security dilemma regarding Iran, with a proposed interim Memorandum of Understanding set to end blockades and open the Strait of Hormuz. While this temporary agreement aims to reduce fuel prices and address mid-term election concerns, its finalization in its current form is deemed a colossal strategic mistake.

The author argues it prioritizes short-term political gain, ensuring future pain under an "insufferable criminal regime" and failing to serve Iranian welfare, regional stability, or U.S. interests. Past Western policies have shown the Islamic Republic is "ideologically irredeemable." Trump's call for Iranians to "rise up and attack the institutions" resulted in at least 45,000 deaths by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, yet he denies regime change was a U.S. objective. The author asserts that removing the regime is the only long-term solution to its existential nuclear threat. Trump should acknowledge misjudgment, seek Congressional support for an "Iran operation," and restore information warfare agencies like Voice of America. A coordinated strategy of information operations, intelligence, and judicious military power could defeat the regime and signal China and Russia.
