Drone warfare in Ukraine: Behemoth, autonomous interceptors, and drone diplomacy

Ukraine's Arms Monitor  |  Olena Kryzhanivska

Ukraine's middle-strike drone campaign is actively targeting Russian logistics and air defense systems, with over 300 verified strikes. On June 7, 2026, the new domestic Shahed-like Behemoth drone was publicly used for the first time in a raid on the Chonhar Bridge, a key logistics route connecting occupied Kherson Oblast with occupied Crimea.

This strike, part of a package with FP-2 drones, damaged the bridge deck and blocked transport traffic. The Behemoth UAV, developed by GLEFA and Culver Aerospace, carries a 75 kg tandem warhead (40 kg high-explosive fragmentation, 35 kg thermobaric) up to 300 km. It operates at 90-300 meters altitude with a cruising speed of 170–180 km/h, supporting FPV, semi-automatic, and fully autonomous control via Starlink. Russian sources acknowledge a critical shortage of airborne EW systems against Starlink and call for enhanced counter-drone defenses in Crimea and Mariupol, citing a lack of Pantsir-S1/S1M and Tor-M2 systems. Ukraine's Ministry of Defence prioritizes enemy air defense assets and radars, with destructions nearly doubling in April 2026 compared to October 2025.
