How Israel made Trump's Iran betrayal inevitable - comment

The Jerusalem Post  |  Ezra Taylor

Israel's long-standing "mowing the grass" doctrine, which manages threats like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran through repeated military actions rather than comprehensive diplomatic strategy, has proven unsustainable and costly. This policy, evident in the cycle of Gaza conflicts and strikes against Iran's nuclear program, prioritizes military solutions while neglecting the diplomatic instrument.

The author contends that Israel has failed to cultivate deep plans for engaging diplomatically to drain extremism from Palestinian society or to build broad coalitions against the Iranian regime, despite potential partners. The foreign ministry's underfunding contrasted sharply with military investment. While the Abraham Accords achieved some success, they did not address core issues in Gaza or the West Bank. This strategic imbalance, particularly under Prime Minister Netanyahu, has led to a situation where force is perceived as the only tool, making a comprehensive, long-term resolution elusive and perpetuating a cycle of conflict management rather than genuine problem-solving.
