Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Reznikov Describes New Type of War

The Jamestown Foundation  |  Bethany Elliott

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov asserts that the war with Russia has transformed into a highly technological conflict dominated by electronic warfare and cheap, scalable drone swarms. This rapid evolution has created a 50-kilometer-wide grey zone on the battlefield where traditional infantry and heavy armor cannot survive, rendering conventional manpower advantages obsolete.

While these rapid technological adaptations have stabilized the frontlines, they have not yet enabled Kyiv to achieve major territorial breakthroughs toward its 1991 borders. Consequently, public support for negotiations is rising, with a KIIS poll showing 77 percent of Ukrainians favor a ceasefire if backed by robust security guarantees. Meanwhile, Moscow faces severe financial strain and a depleted professional officer corps, which may force the Kremlin to seek a temporary operational pause to regroup. Ultimately, lasting peace remains contingent on credible external guarantors, though Beijing's willingness to assume this role remains highly uncertain.

Comment
Cheap attrition technologies now dominate modern combat theatres. Traditional military powers must rapidly adapt their defence procurement strategies. Heavy legacy platforms face severe survivability challenges in transparent battlespaces. Future deterrence will depend on software adaptability rather than industrial mass.
