Pakistan's digital tourism sector is increasingly dominated by opaque booking platform algorithms that dictate market visibility, stifle competition, and threaten to monopolise the industry. These intermediary platforms consolidate market power by creating self-perpetuating network effects that lock in both hosts and consumers, effectively stripping the market of competitive pricing.

This rapid digitisation has outpaced national regulatory frameworks, leaving policymakers unprepared for the systemic shift in how consumer trust and property exposure are manufactured. By controlling search rankings through proprietary, unreadable mathematical codes, these dominant platforms manipulate user perception and create extreme revenue volatility for local hospitality businesses. Consequently, the lack of algorithmic transparency and data oversight risks transforming a vital economic growth driver into an exploitative, centralized digital monopoly. Sustaining long-term economic expansion in the region will ultimately depend on establishing robust regulatory mechanisms that enforce transparency and protect local stakeholders from arbitrary platform manipulation.
