Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range strike capabilities with domestically produced drones and missiles, enabling attacks deep inside Russian territory. Overnight on July 1-2, Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in Ufa, over 800 miles from the front line, for the second time, and also hit a military-industrial facility in the Penza region producing sensors for cruise and ballistic missiles.
This campaign, with eleven refineries hit in June alone, forces Russian President Vladimir Putin to confront worsening fuel shortages and economic strain. Ukraine's President Zelenskyy confirmed these strikes, highlighting a shift from relying on Western long-range weapons to its own rapidly expanding production. Putin's options are narrowing to escalation or negotiation, despite the Kremlin's stated intent to continue fighting.
