Are America’s vast Gulf bases worth rebuilding?

Iranian missile and drone strikes against United States military infrastructure across the Persian Gulf have exposed the severe vulnerability of large, fixed installations located near Iranian territory. The bombardments forced American commanders to disperse personnel and assets westward to facilities in Jordan, Israel, and Diego Garcia. This operational disruption has prompted Pentagon strategists to reconsider the long-term viability of spending an estimated $5 billion to repair 11 damaged bases across seven regional nations.

Central Command is increasingly testing an agile deployment posture, scattering forces across smaller combat outposts and temporary touch-and-go airstrips rather than relying on concentrated hubs. While relocating assets mitigates short-range threat vectors, a permanent drawdown threatens to undermine the security guarantees established under the 1980 Carter Doctrine. The resulting strategic dilemma leaves Washington balancing military survivability against the risk of alienating regional allies, even as Iranian forces adapt their arsenal to target extended operational depths.
