Uncrewed aerial systems deployed during Russia’s war against Ukraine have redefined modern conflict by enabling high-volume, low-cost precision strikes and real-time surveillance across land, air, and maritime domains. Ukrainian forces leveraged domestic initiatives like the Army of Drones project to expand local manufacturing from seven to 200 producers within a single year.
This rapid industrial scaling bypassed rigid conventional procurement frameworks, allowing fast deployment of commercial quadcopters, long-range attack platforms, and uncrewed surface vehicles directly to combat units. Evidence-based research incorporating twenty-seven qualitative interviews with Ukrainian and Australian experts demonstrates that operational success now depends on multi-spectrum counter-UAS capabilities, layered electromagnetic warfare, and continuous software adaptation rather than expensive platform sophistication. These combat findings provide essential benchmarks for the Australian Defence Force to restructure its integrated strike doctrines, dispersed force survivability, and capability acquisition priorities against emerging peer adversaries in high-intensity operational theaters.
