How the U.S. Squandered Its Strategic Advantage

The United States faces a critical shortage of long-range missiles and interceptor systems after five months of conflict with Iran, drawing down stockpiles of Patriot and THAAD interceptors to as low as 20 percent of required inventory levels. This rapid inventory depletion severely compromises Washington’s ability to defend Persian Gulf bases or counter potential contingencies in the Indo-Pacific theater.

Decades of post-Cold War industrial downsizing, combined with sustained munition expenditure against the Houthis and in Ukraine, created structural manufacturing bottlenecks that contract awards cannot rectify before 2030. Meanwhile, Iranian drone and ballistic missile production continues to outpace Western defensive output, shifting theater dynamics toward cost-imposition and exhaustion. With Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth seeking billions in emergency congressional funding, the Trump administration is currently forced to consider a joint Omani-Iranian framework for maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz to manage trade rather than risk unmitigated military escalation without adequate defensive coverage.

The rapid consumption of MIM-104 Patriot and THAAD interceptors against Iranian saturating salvos exposes the structural inelasticity of Western solid rocket motor production. Defence contractors cannot scale complex surface-to-air missile manufacturing without multi-year lead times for specialised subcomponents and tooling. This industrial bottleneck directly undermines integrated air and missile defence coverage, leaving theater command structures vulnerable to cost-imposition strategies through asymmetric drone and ballistic mass.
