Laser weapons for space? US officials see threat, opportunity

United States military officials are prioritizing non-kinetic counterspace capabilities, including ground, airborne, and space-based laser weapons, to address the tactical challenge of neutralizing proliferated satellite constellations. Speaking at the Army Space and Missile Defense Symposium, United States Space Command deputy commander Lt. Gen. Rick Zellmann highlighted that targeting high-density satellite networks of up to 10,000 assets requires asymmetric, low-cost "one-to-many" solutions rather than direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles.

As adversaries like China and Russia advance orbital high-energy laser systems to dazzle and disable sensors, American commanders are seeking to integrate directed energy across stratospheric platforms alongside integrated naval cyber operations. This operational shift reflects growing concerns over the vulnerability of critical satellite ground stations and landing sites to one-way attack systems. To maintain resilient command and control, military leadership emphasizes the urgency of diversifying surface landing hubs while deploying high-energy lasers to disrupt adversary kill webs across multi-domain operational theaters.
