Iranian military operations in the Strait of Hormuz have severely disrupted global commodity transit since February 28, 2026, threatening international energy security and economic stability. Following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, Iran asserted unprecedented control over the strategic chokepoint, through which roughly 25% of global maritime crude oil and 19% of liquefied natural gas passed in 2025.

However, renewed Iranian maritime attacks by early August 2026 triggered the reimposition of the U.S. blockade, destabilizing markets for energy, fertilizer, and helium.
