My unit took on Ukraine’s ‘Nemesis’ drone hunters. Here’s what really happened.

Blackhawk Company of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment participated in a 10-day training exercise at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany, facing Ukraine’s elite 412th Unmanned Systems Forces Regiment, known as "Nemesis." Initial media accounts in a Wall Street Journal article portrayed the exercise as a total defeat for American armored formations.

Persistent overhead surveillance on the 14-by-27-kilometer range forced immediate adjustments to concealment, vehicle dispersion, and movement routines. Troops dispersed Bradley Fighting Vehicles and traversed 40-degree vegetated slopes to break visual contact. Tactical adaptation proved essential. While Nemesis demonstrated rapid sensor-to-shooter kill chains with cheap drones, aerial surveillance still required ground forces to exploit tactical information. Moving to offensive operations on day six, the unit targeted drone control nodes, proving that heavy armor is not obsolete and that armoured mobility remains protective when coupled with aggressive maneuver.

The Hohenfels engagement demonstrates that drone-saturated battlefields demand an evolutionary shift in mechanized infantry doctrine rather than the abandonment of heavy armor. When the 412th Unmanned Systems Forces Regiment denied standard road networks at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, tactical success depended on aggressive off-axis maneuver through steep dead space. Concealing Bradley Fighting Vehicles in heavily vegetated gullies proved that passive camouflage and terrain masking remain effective against airborne multispectral sensors. Sustained combat power in Bavarian terrain requires Bradley crews to treat overhead airspace as continuously contested territory.

This tactical adaptation succeeds when Bradley platoons disrupt Nemesis sensor-to-shooter loops at their ground command nodes. Targeting 412th Regiment operators on the ground neutralises aerial threat vectors faster than organic short-range air defence platforms can intercept incoming munitions. Neutralising Nemesis ground stations restores operational tempo for Bradley formations without sacrificing armored survivability.

Strategic Question for Discussion
If drone operators from elite units like the 412th Regiment can be countered primarily through terrain masking and ground targeting, does integrated short-range air defense remain the primary requirement for armored survivability, or has tactical maneuver surpassed hardware defense?
The available evidence points toward tactical maneuver and signature management acting as immediate force multipliers, though they cannot entirely replace organic short-range air defense. While terrain masking neutralizes reconnaissance drones in heavily vegetated areas like Hohenfels, open terrain will inevitably expose armored formations to direct loitering munition strikes. My assessment is that survival will depend on integrating physical ground aggression against drone launch teams with automated kinetic interceptors.
