The Canadian Armed Forces is planning to acquire a new fleet of MBTs following a government request for information to guide its armored vehicle modernization. This procurement effort faces critical decisions regarding vehicle weight and capability, as the military balances the traditional desire for heavily armored, large-caliber platforms against the operational realities of modern combined-arms warfare.
Historically, armored design has prioritized the iron triangle of protection, firepower, and mobility, but modern 70-ton behemoths increasingly compromise tactical agility and logistical sustainability. These massive platforms exceed the military load classifications of most European and North American bridges and consume excessive fuel, creating severe operational bottlenecks. Consequently, future armored doctrine must shift toward lighter, 40-to-50-ton vehicles equipped with advanced munitions and 105 mm guns. This transition ensures integration within combined-arms teams alongside infantry, engineers, and drones, while retaining only a limited number of heavy tanks for specialized roles.
The logistical footprint of the Canadian Army's seventy-tonne Leopard 2A6 fleet imposes severe operational constraints on expeditionary deployments. Operating these platforms requires an extensive fuel supply chain, with a single vehicle consuming approximately 500 US gallons of fuel every twelve hours of active operations. This high consumption rate strains the Canadian Army's limited tactical supply columns and increases their vulnerability to drone interdiction.
Furthermore, the weight of these platforms restricts movement to specific infrastructure, as many bridges in potential European theatres cannot support Military Load Classification 70 loads. This infrastructure limitation forces engineers to deploy heavy bridging equipment like the Rapidly Emplaced Bridge System, slowing the tempo of advance. Consequently, deploying the Leopard 2A6 forces combat engineers to focus on route reinforcement rather than active obstacle clearance.
