Taiwan parliament rejects government military drone plan, passes own version

Taiwan's opposition-controlled parliament rejected a T$210 billion ($6.6 billion) special budget proposal intended to procure approximately 210,000 military drones by 2031 to counter growing threats from China. Instead, lawmakers passed an alternative plan allocating T$240 billion over six years from the annual budget, capping annual spending at T$40 billion in principle.

This legislative maneuver replaces a dedicated funding mechanism with standard annual budget reviews. The defense ministry warned that the annual spending cap will severely hinder Taiwan's ability to build combat capabilities, pointing out that T$42.1 billion was already slated for drone acquisition in 2027 alone. Highlighting lessons from conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, executive officials argued that uncrewed aerial systems are critical for defense self-reliance and domestic industrial development. Opposition Kuomintang lawmakers countered that regular budgetary oversight is essential to prevent unchecked spending. The legislative shift creates immediate procurement bottlenecks. Ultimately, political friction risks delaying acquisition cycles and introduces strategic uncertainty into Taiwan's defense force posture.
