Tarique Rahman's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a decisive victory in Bangladesh's February 2026 general election, securing 209 of 300 seats following his seventeen-year exile. This election, the first credible one in nearly two decades, also saw 68 percent approval for the July Charter, a package of constitutional and electoral reforms aimed at preventing power overcentralization.
These developments followed a July–August 2024 public uprising that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian Awami League (AL) government, which had consolidated power through increasingly repressive means. An interim government, led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, stabilized the economy, which had suffered from systemic corruption and a $234 billion plunder under Hasina, and secured a $4.7 billion IMF loan. Yunus's administration also barred the AL from participating in the 2026 elections, setting the stage for potential future political crises despite the economic stabilization and free polls.
