New Light-Touch Trump AI Cyber Executive Order Reveals Accelerationists Still Rule the Roost

The Trump administration released a new light-touch executive order (EO) on June 2, 2026, titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security,” addressing AI cybersecurity risks. This EO reveals the administration's limited appetite for regulating the booming AI industry, despite public skepticism and the emergence of advanced AI models like Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Cyber, which demonstrate significant cyber capabilities.

The EO directs federal agencies, including the Department of War and Department of Homeland Security, to bolster cybersecurity for IT systems and critical infrastructure. It also establishes a voluntary framework for AI developers to provide the federal government with access to powerful models for up to 30 days before wider release. This 30-day period is a reduction from a prior 90-day draft, reflecting a compromise influenced by tech executives. The voluntary nature and governance structure, placing Treasury in a lead role over traditional cyber agencies, raise implementation concerns. This approach risks undermining U.S. AI dominance by failing to build public trust amid calls for stronger regulation.
