President Donald Trump launched a combined military campaign and economic blockade against Iran in 2026 to force regime change, but six months of hostilities have brought Washington’s strategic posture to a dead end. Despite sustained airstrikes targeting Iranian infrastructure and command echelons, Tehran preserved its missile and drone arsenals, successfully throttling maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and driving up global energy prices.

This operational resilience exposes fundamental limitations in the historic American reliance on coercive pressure and economic sanctions. Tehran’s willingness to absorb civilian suffering while avoiding a U.S. ground invasion has effectively inverted the escalation calculus, demonstrating that coercive threats lose leverage when adversaries can impose reciprocal economic costs. Furthermore, Washington’s unilateral waivers issued without structural nuclear concessions demonstrate how maritime choke points can undermine long-standing embargo mechanisms.
