Iran’s Missile War Could Cost US 15 Gulf Bases, Reshape Middle East Power

Iran’s precision missile and drone campaign during Operation Epic Fury in early 2026 damaged over 200 American facilities across the Persian Gulf, rendering up to 15 military installations operationally unreliable and forcing the Pentagon to evaluate a major force posture overhaul. The extensive destruction demonstrates that concentrated rear-area bases within Iranian strike range have become severe operational liabilities.

To mitigate these vulnerabilities, Pentagon planners are considering redistributing capabilities westward toward inland Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and southern Europe. Simultaneously, naval resupply functions are shifting to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to preserve sustainment for United States Central Command. This westward redistribution increases transit times threefold, elevating aerial-refueling demands, maintenance friction, and escort requirements across the entire Middle East theater. Consequently, Washington's future regional presence will likely depend on smaller, mobile outposts and redundant supply networks to maintain credible deterrence against persistent precision strike threats.

The reallocation of underway replenishment and naval sustainment from Naval Support Activity Bahrain to Diego Garcia exposes a structural vulnerability in US Fifth Fleet operational endurance. Shifting primary distribution nodes 2,500 nautical miles southward quadruples transit loops for Henry J. Kaiser-class replenishment oilers servicing surface action groups in the Persian Gulf. This geographic detachment severely limits the turnaround frequency of critical fuel and ordnance deliveries, restricting carrier strike group persistence within primary threat sectors.

The resulting bottleneck forces an increased reliance on land-based aerial refuelling corridors from KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus fleets operating out of Prince Sultan Air Base. Consequently, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet sorties launched into the Gulf face reduced loiter time, directly diminishing combat air patrol persistence over the Strait of Hormuz.

Strategic Question for Discussion
If US naval sustainment remains anchored at Diego Garcia rather than Naval Support Activity Bahrain, can land-based KC-46 and KC-135 refuelling flights adequately offset the reduced sea-based replenishment for strike groups in the Strait of Hormuz, or does airframe availability become the primary operational bottleneck?
The operational reality indicates that aerial refuelling assets cannot fully compensate for the loss of proximate sea-based replenishment without depleting theater-wide tanker capacity. While KC-135 and KC-46 sorties can extend short-term tactical loiter times over the Strait of Hormuz, the extreme flight distances from inland nodes like Prince Sultan Air Base consume a disproportionate share of tanker flight hours per mission. Consequently, my assessment is that airframe maintenance strain and tanker availability will quickly constrain sustained carrier operations far more severely than ordnance inventory levels.
