Anduril’s newly unveiled Thunder drone, a Group 5 hybrid-electric tiltrotor, aims to transform US Army aviation by serving as an autonomous "loyal wingman" to protect crewed helicopters in highly contested airspaces. Operating alongside the AH-64 Apache and MV-75 Cheyenne II, this high-speed platform matches helicopter tactics to survive lethal low-altitude environments.

This operational shift reflects a broader departure from high-altitude counterinsurgency platforms like the MQ-9 Reaper toward survivable, radar-evading systems designed specifically for peer conflict. Powered by the Lattice AI autonomy system, the reusable aircraft executes intent-based commands from human pilots while carrying modular payloads including Hellfire missiles, APKWS rocket pods, and electronic warfare packages to repeatedly strike dynamic targets. As competing aerospace firms like Boeing, Sikorsky, and Bell Textron develop rival vertical-lift wingmen, the Pentagon's pursuit of "affordable mass" will likely accelerate the deployment of these containerized, self-deploying autonomous formations to enhance tactical flexibility.
