The Strategic Importance Of The Northeastern Indian State Of Assam

Eurasia Review  |  P. K. Balachandran

Assam is emerging as a critical geopolitical buffer for India as New Delhi partners with Japan to counter China's expanding economic and military footprint across neighboring Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar. This strategic collaboration aims to secure the vulnerable Siliguri Corridor, a narrow land strip connecting India to its northeastern states that remains highly susceptible to external disruptions.

Historically marginalized by internal conflicts and illegal immigration, the region is undergoing rapid industrialization supported by Japanese infrastructure funding and a $3 billion Tata semiconductor plant in Jagiroad. Meanwhile, Beijing continues to deepen regional dependencies through Belt and Road Initiative projects, including a planned hydropower facility on the Brahmaputra River and defense deals with Bangladesh. To mitigate these encirclement risks, India has accelerated domestic connectivity projects, laying 1,824 kilometers of new railway tracks since 2014 to bolster military mobility and regional economic integration while strengthening its Act East Policy.
